Polar bear, Ursus maritimus, NORWAY/SVALBARD, Norway and Russia have huge protected areas in the Arctic with quite high polar bear numbers. Polar bear numbers are reasonably stable at about 20-25,000 individuals world wide. The polar bear now faces a new challenge: that of climate change. Melting sea ice makes the bear’s main prey, the ringed seal, much more difficult to hunt. On Svalbard there are polar bear safaris both summer and winter that provide great opportunities for the visitor to meet this icon of the north. At a safe distance, for bear and man alike.
