Short-finned pilot whale, Globicephala macrorhynchus, SPAIN/CANARY ISLANDS. The pilot whale is a very sociable kind of dolphin, sometimes referred to as the ”Cheetah of the Deep” for their high speeds when hunting deep sea squid. They live in big pods of tens or even hundreds. As a consequence, they are the only animals known to displace orcas, who seem to panic in the presence of pilot whale pods. In the Canary Islands there are whale tours where you can go swimming with pilot whales.
