Lammergeier, Gypaetus barbatus, SPAIN/SIERRA DE BOUMORT, PYRENEES, CATALONIA Known in Spanish as the Quebrantahuesos, ”The Bonebreaker”, the Lammergeier drops bones from a great height on specifically chosen stone slabs, in order to crack the bones open and allow the bird to eat the rich marrow inside. It has the largest wingspan of all raptors in Europe, up to 285 cm. A successful re-introduction programme in the Alps has resulted in 10 new breeding pairs so far. Lammergeiers can also be found in the Caucasus Mountains, on Crete and in the Pyrenées, from where they are slowly spreading across Spain.
