  • European common crane, Grus grus, SWEDEN/LAKE HORNBORGA, VÄSTERGÖTLAND, The crane is another comeback success species that has increased about tenfold over the last 30 years. Its migration stopover sites are becoming local tourism magnets. Here at Lake Hornborga in Sweden, where each spring some 15,000 cranes come together, more than 150 000 people come to greet them. The biggest gatherings of cranes in Europe are at Hortobágy in Hungary, outside Berlin, as well as on the Baltic coast in Germany and around Lac-du-Der in France. In Hortobágy there were over 100,000 at one moment in 2009.

  • White-tailed Sea Eagle, Haliaeetus albicilla, Flatanger, Nord-Trondelag, Norway..White-tailed sea eagle Haliaeetus albicilla NORWAY/FLATANGER, NORD-TRÖNDELAGThe sea eagle is another real comeback species in Europe. Persecuted during centuries and finally almost lost to chemical pollutants in the 1970s, it is quickly reclaiming most of its former territories across Europe. In 2009 Norway hosted 4,000 pairs, Germany 530, Sweden 600, Finland 300, the UK 50 and Denmark 21 pairs. The sea eagle's comeback is a clear result of devoted work by individual citizens, businesses, NGOs and public agencies.Yes, we can make a difference. Nature conservation works.

  • Once the newly hatched loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta) is licked by the first waves it is saved from the ghost crabs, just to face the aquatic predators now. The hatchling most effectively switches from the alternate movements of on-land-locomotion to the simultaneous stroke of underwater flight.
