Night shadow, Hungary

by Gonye Csaba,

I managed to make this red fox used to my hide last winter. At first I wanted to take photos of predator birds through the reflex glass, but the fox usually stole the meat. It often appeared also by day, so I could take many good photos of it. Altough it drove the birds away in such a case, but it compensated me for this with interesting behaviour. Something was still missing. None of the pictures conveyed the sense, when the fox came noisilessly from the bushy. Than I had an idea: I tried to take photos of it at night so that it occured twice on the photo. I used three flashes with a few seconds shutter speeds. At first I outlined with back-lighting the contour of the animal sneaking on the limb, than I lighted with two flashes the fox leaning against the tree-trunk. I always had to set up the lights as puncture as possible before going into the hide. After that I waited quietly for the fox. It did not come every night, so this picture is the result of a week-long trying. I more than once stayed outside several hours, when the temperature was 8 degrees below zero. So the equipment frosted as well. Despite the being shivering I think it worth while.
