A second successful bison release, and more

The successful rewilding of Europe continues as Rewilding Europe releases more animals and from several species back into the wild. In 2015 European bison have been released in the Southern Carpathians, Romania and in the Rhodope mountains, Bulgaria where also 30 fallow deer were released. In Velebit, Croatia 23 Bosnian mountain horses were released together with 22 Sayaguesa cattle, part of the Tauros Programme. Both the Rhodope mountains bison herd as well as the one in the Southern Carpathians are already expanding by themselves too, with their first calves having been born in the wild. Wild Wonders of Europe photographers have done photo missions to all the different rewilding areas, and you can see the image galleries here:

The Wild Wonders of China team has completed the initiative’s first pioneer photo mission. The photographers Xu Yongchun, Chen Jianwei, Xie Jianguo, Li Yuliang, Staffan Widstrand, Magnus Lundgren, Jed Weingarten and Wu Ying were joined by journalists, guides and conservation officials to the Tangjiahe National Nature reserve in the Sichuan province of China. This Pioneer Expedition was made possible thanks to the generous support from the Iris Foundation, whose founder Jean-Marie Hullot also joined the team in Tangjiahe together with his son Jonathan Hullot. Asiatic black bear, takin, muntjac, golden pheasant, and tragopan were some of the species the team was able to observe and photograph. The Oder Delta a new Rewilding area in Europe

Rewilding Europe has announced the Oder delta, right on the border of Germany and Poland, to become the eighth Rewilding area. The 250 000 ha large area is a varied region with wild and rich ecosystems on land, at sea and in freshwater. It is home to ”The Big 7” white-tailed eagle, European beaver, European bison, elk, wolf, Atlantic sturgeon and grey seal. The comeback of several of these species has already made the Peene river mouth, part of the rewilding area, an attractive ecotourism destination with activities such as beaver safaris, birdwatching, bike trails and canoeing. Wild Wonders of Europe photographers Staffan Widstrand and Solvin Zankl, have visited the area on two different photo missions for Rewilding Europe. To view their images please check out the Oder delta galleries.

To find out more about the rewilding of the Oder delta, please visit the Rewilding Europe website.

A raptor photography exhibition was launched at the Beijing Zoo on December 15, 2014. It was organised by Wild Wonders of China’s partner Bird Media Ltd, and its CEO Xie Jianguo, together with the zoo. Some 70 species of raptors that exist in China were on display, all images shot by several top Chinese nature photographers. “Photography is a great way to charm people with their natural heritage, so that they will better enjoy and understand it, love it more and care for it more” says Mr Xie, who is also involved in the board of the Special foundation Wild Wonders of China, which is registered under the China Green Carbon Foundation.

Wild Wonders of Europe renews partnership with Rewilding Europe

Wild Wonders of Europe renews partnership with Rewilding Europe

Wild Wonders of Europe and Rewilding Europe have renewed their partnership for another three years, by signing a Memorandum of Understanding today. Underlining that both organisations are continuing their work together to promote the return of wild nature in Europe and to create a sense of ‘Pride in the Wild’ among a very wide audience.

Following these successful first four years together, Wild Wonders of Europe continues as a core partner of Rewilding Europe. As a result of the partnership so far, huge progress has been made in reaching out to a wide European audience. Top professional nature photographers have carried out photo missions to all of the rewilding areas, producing high quality images that have and are being used for all Rewilding Europe’s communication products and media events. In Madrid and Stockholm, Rewilding Europe supported the Wild Wonders of Europe outdoor Exhibitions, attracting nearly 900,000 visitors all together. Wild Wonders of Europe’s extensive network of media contacts was also fed with information from the new Rewilding Europe initiative. Through efforts like these, ‘rewilding’ was widely and quickly introduced as a new, complementary conservation tool in Europe, and a lot of publicity and support was generated across our continent – and in other parts of the world.

"After initially having worked together on introducing the concept of ‘rewilding’ into a European setting, our communication efforts are now focusing even more on leveraging connection and support for practical, local rewilding results and impact, together with our local partners and beneficiaries in the rewilding areas,” says Frans Schepers, Managing Director of Rewilding Europe.

“As our joint mission has only really just begun, Wild Wonders of Europe will continue to be a very keen, supportive and close partner to Rewilding Europe,” says Staffan Widstrand, Managing Director or Wild Wonders of Europe. “We will continue to reach out both to very wide and to very specific audiences, using the emotional power of great photography. Putting people more in contact with the wonderful natural heritage we all have in common, a part of our identity as humans, since many many thousands of years back”.

Wild Wonders of Europe is one of the initiating partners of Rewilding Europe and has been responsible for most of the initiative’s communication work from its start in 2010. Manifested by this MoU, Wild Wonders of Europe continues to join forces with Rewilding Europe to communicate together about Making Europe a Wilder Place, in support of Rewilding Europe’s mission and work.
