Jari Peltomäki - Texel, The Netherlands III

Day 3. Texel
Another early morning with Avocet families. These beautiful birds are surprisingly tame here and can be photographed without a hide at close range! Some German photographers said that this is the best place in the world to photograph Avocets – it might be true… However, it is always difficult to make different shots than other photographers!
Today I had a meeting with Staatsbosbeheer ranger Eric van der Spek. They are in charge of some of the Nature conservation areas on the island (and in the whole of The Netherlands). Eric was very helpful and gave me information about the sites where it is possible to photograph birds on Texel. Thank you to Eric and also to Henkjan Kievit for their great support of the Wild Wonders of Europe project! They have done very good work combining bird conservation and serving a large number of tourists at the same time!
Then I met local professional wildlife filmmaker Marc Plomp. He was extremely helpful about the photography sites on the island. He has a bird information centre and a shop with binoculars, birdbooks, bird dvd´s and birdfood for sale in de Cocksdorp in Texel. He also has a couple of bungalows for visitors to rent. So if you are visiting Texel and looking for information or a place to stay , get in touch with Marc. His website is Plompdigitalvideo.
He is a very pleasant man!
