Wild Wonders of Europe commissioned Europe's leading nature photographers to document the rich biodiversity of our continent. This month, we are highlighting the work of Edwin Giesbers.

Edwin Giesbers, a professional nature photographer based in the Netherlands, enjoys covering a wide range of subjects, from insects and plants to birds, mammals and landscapes. His pictures have been successful in leading international photo competitions and his work is widely published in books, magazines, calendars and promotional media. His mission for Wild Wonders was the principality of Liechtenstein where he mainly focussed on alpine flora.

Liechtenstein measures just 24km x 12.5km and is the fourth smallest state in Europe. However, it possesses great natural riches and 1600 plant species occur in its mountains and forests, and all Alpine areas of Liechtenstein have been declared an integral floral reserve to protect plants such as the edelweiss and gentians. In Edwin's own words, “Fortunately, the weather gods gave us a little bit of everything: rain, fog and cold but also sunshine and warm weather during our stay. Sometimes there were dramatic dark skies over the landscape, and another time, sun and a clear blue sky. Birds, like Alpine Chough, flew above the mountains and Alpine Marmots crossed our path. Never before I have been in an Alpine area and I really fell in love with Liechtenstein with its great views over the mountains and on the ground, many, many different plants.”
